Barn quilts, wooden squares painted to replicate individual quilt blocks, began to be hung on barns when Donna Sue Groves honored her mother, a quilter, by hanging the first barn quilt in 2001 in Ohio.  Since then, barn quilts have spread to over 30 states and are often organized in “trails” for travelers to discover and follow.

Granton’s barn quilt trail was begun with the hanging of its first quilt in August of 2012 and is the only organized group of barn quilts in central Wisconsin, with quilts in the countryside as well as within the village limits.  Since its creation is fairly recent, it is a project-in-progress with more quilts to be added in the near future.

We invite you to take a trip back in time as you slow down and enjoy the scenic countryside of our region, the artistry of the traditional quilt designs and the historic and beautiful buildings on which they are displayed.  Take your time, pack a lunch or, better yet, stop at one of the village’s businesses, a local country store or cafe to enjoy some local flavors.  You will find a variety of produce stands, maple syrup vendors, Amish shops, crafters and friendly people along the way.

Safety & Respecting Private Property

When viewing and enjoying the Quilt Trail, use caution when slowing or stopping near a site.  Stopping along busy roads can be dangerous and illegal.  All sites are on private property and should be viewed from the public road unless otherwise indicated at the site if it is a business open to the public.   We are indebted to our quilt hosts for their generosity.
